Insurance Brokers Association of British Columbia

What do you want in a career?

Professional stature

  • Insurance brokers are among the key advisors everyone needs, whether it’s for the protection of their personal assets or for their business.
  • Insurance brokers hold an important position of trust, as they have a responsibility to assess the customer’s needs and recommend appropriate coverage.
  • The four modules of the Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) designation meet the requirements for the entry level and subsequent levels of licensing required by the provincial government. Licensee candidates can start working toward their designation from the very beginning, and can progress at their own pace.
  • Insurance transactions are based on integrity and utmost good faith. A broker’s role doesn’t end with the sale of an insurance policy, it starts there.

Diversity

  • You can pursue your passions by specializing in certain types of coverage, or you can be a generalist and enjoy the endless variety of challenges your clients bring to you.
  • Insurance is mainly a people business, but there are many other skill sets and interests you may have that can be an asset to your career in insurance.

Advancement

  • There are excellent opportunities in the insurance industry. New positions are being posted daily on the IBABC Job Board.
  • There are opportunities at all levels, especially for people who earn industry designations.
  • Your career in insurance is what you make it. Projections indicate above-average growth for property and casualty insurance products and services.

Flexibility

  • Everyone, in every community, needs insurance. Your experience and education as an insurance broker can easily be transferred to new locations if you choose to move.
  • Many employers can offer part-time and job-sharing schedules to allow employees to balance work with higher education or child-rearing.

Satisfaction

  • Insurance makes it possible for people to take some of the biggest steps of their lives – to buy a car or house, to start a business. And you’re helping them to realize those dreams.
  • You’re among the first to respond in emergency situations, or when losses occur, to help people get back on their feet again.

Ease of entry

  • A general insurance broker’s license is required to handle insurance transactions. To prepare for the pre-licensing exam, you can study on your own, take an online course or enrol in a one-week course of classroom instruction. Once you have passed the pre-licensing exam and are employed in a brokerage, additional training will be arranged by your employer.
