Commercial Crime Coverages
3 Technical Credits
Nick Batistic |
| Crime coverages tend to be overlooked by many
brokers, partly because the exposures are not as apparent in
the same way as physical property and liability risks are.
This is a serious problem as Canadian businesses experience
significant amounts of crime claims every year, many of which
are either uninsured or woefully deficient in carried limits.
In this session, you will take a look at all of the common
exposures faced by commercial clients, look at loss examples,
and evaluate applicable wordings. If you are rusty or inexperienced
with crime coverage, this seminar will assist you in looking
for ways to help clients understand the exposures and select
appropriate coverages and limits. |

Liability Coverage -NEW-
3 Technical Credits
Glen MacRae |
| In this continuation from the morning’s ‘Part
1 – Construction Property Coverage’ seminar, you

relationship between the CGL, the Wrap-up liability policy,
and the governing CCDC contracts that dictate the beneficiaries
of coverage. You will undertake a detailed review of claims
scenarios to see how various coverage and endorsements respond
to different losses. You will also investigate the coverage
dilemma created when the “New IBC CGL” for construction
risks is applied. |

Contemporary Liability Coverage, Part 1 - The
Coverage Dilemma
3 Technical Credits
Glen MacRae |
| In 2005, three of Canada’s largest insurers
rolled out the “New IBC CGL.” Interestingly, these
companies write roughly half of the total premium in the country.
One other has followed. The remainder of the marketplace has
elected to continue using the broader “Old CGL” form
in order to compete. The “New IBC” policy form
attempts to overwrite established insurance law by imposing
potentially onerous conditions on insureds. If they fail to
meet those conditions, coverage is denied. Over the last year,
it has become clear that many brokers haven’t fully appreciated
that moving their clients from one form to another, even with
the same companies, can expose insureds to uncovered losses
and their own firms to significant E&O exposures. In this
seminar, you will undertake a case study to walk step-by-step
through a variety of claims scenarios while learning how the “New
IBC CGL” operates very differently from the “Old
IBC CGL” form. |
| Who Should Attend: This seminar is suited
to both brokerage and underwriting professionals who have one
or more years experience in commercial liability insurance. |

Contemporary
Liability Coverage, Part 2 – Exclusions
and What to do About Them
3 Technical Credits
Glen MacRae |
| This seminar continues on from the morning’s ‘Part
1 - Coverage Dilemma’ session. You will explore the operation
of various exclusions in a number of claims scenarios. By doing
so, in addition to becoming better familiar with the CGL policy
wording, you will become more aware of the general legal principles
that govern the interpretation of CGL policies and the application
of its various exclusions and limitations. Some of the exclusions
are unique to some of the “New IBC CGL” forms while
others are common to both the “New” and “Old” forms. |

Developing Effective Risk Control Reports
3 Technical Credits
Edith Strauss |
| In their marketing efforts, brokers are increasingly preparing Risk Control Reports, even for smaller risks for which reports would not have been done in the past. The inclusion of such reports often results in a swifter response from underwriters because they supply clear, concise risk overviews. They provide an assessment of the risks and exposures that are of primary interest to underwriters and give information on how the clients control their hazards. In this session, you will discover the essentials for researching, developing, and submitting effective Risk Control Reports to benefit your clients and underwriters. |

Front Line Commercial Building Inspection
3 Technical
Credits
Nick Batistic |
| Every broker who submits a property risk - and
often a liability risk - to an underwriter needs to appreciate
the physical aspects that the underwriter will look for. Not
every risk is the best of its class but, nonetheless, if an
underwriter gets a clear and reasonably complete inspection
report from the broker, they are more likely to produce quicker
and more favourable terms. In this seminar, learn from an experienced
commercial broker, former claims examiner and risk inspector
what to look for in physical risks, particularly the attributes
of commercial buildings, including construction type, heating,
plumbing and electrical hazards and more. |

The Intricacies of Strata Claims -NEW-
3 Technical Credits
Evan Miles et al, Crawford and Company |
| Due to changes in the Strata Corporation Act and subsequent legal decisions, the issues of which insurer insures what and which party – the Strata Corporation or the Unit Owner – pays what deductible have become complex. In this half-day seminar, senior independent insurance adjuster professionals will give you a first-hand look at how claims for Strata Corporations are settled today in BC. The first half of the session will highlight current legislation and new case law plus the emerging challenges with coverage issues that brokers, claims practitioners, and insurers are all faced with. The second half will be an open forum to give you the opportunity to pose questions and discuss Strata Claims issues with the highly experienced presenters. This will assist you in better advising and servicing your Strata Corporation clients. It will also help you to understand and establish the relationships that are necessary between you, your insurers, and the adjusters when faced with such claims that usually seem simple on the surface but become complex once they are underway. |

Keeping Up to Date with Building Bylaws -UPDATED-

Nick Batistic |
| To help you offer a better quality of advice to your building owner clients, this half-day seminar will help you come to grips with the various, sometimes intricate bylaws that govern reconstruction of buildings and to come to a proper understanding of the related processes within the municipal system. Gaining this knowledge will also help you in securing appropriate endorsements for the property policy. Bylaws are a continuously moving target -- the new BC Building Code implemented in January 2007 now means that buildings 15 years or older are a minimum of 3 generations of code out of date. Be sure to attend this seminar as it will bring you up-to-date on current information and help you stay conversant on the topic. |
