Journalist, political commentator and Washington insider David Frum will deliver the keynote address at the Ninth Annual Robert P. Vickerstaff Insurance Industry Dinner taking place in the Crystal Pavilion of the Pan Pacific Vancouver Hotel, March 22.
The Wall Street Journal called Frum "one of the top 100 intellectuals in America" and one of the "leading commentators of our time". Frum was born in Toronto and is the son of renowned former CBC journalist and broadcaster Barbara Frum and brother of Senator Linda Frum. He received a simultaneous BA and MA in history from Yale in 1982 and graduated cum laude from the Harvard Law School. After George W. Bush's election in 2000, Frum served as his special assistant for economic speechwriting during the run-up to the administration's 2003 invasion of Iraq - indeed, he is known for originating the phrase "axis of evil". In 2007 he assisted Rudolph Giuliani's presidential campaign as senior foreign policy advisor.
Frum has written several books on the American neoconservative movement including: Dead Right, which was lauded by New York Times op-ed columnist Frank Rich as "the smartest book written from the inside about the American conservative movement"; The Right Man: The Surprise Presidency of George W. Bush, which was the first inside account of the decision-making process behind the invasion of Iraq; An End to Evil, where he espouses pre-emptive attacks on North Korea and abandoning the Israeli-Palestinian peace process as a means of winning the "War on Terror", and most recently Comeback: Conservatism That Can Win Again.
From his unique position as one of the few foreign nationals to have worked in the White House, David Frum writes, blogs and speaks on a variety of issues pertinent to the American and Canadian political and economic sphere. He has a vantage point on the current race for Republican presidential candidate that very few Canadians have, and he'll share his observations and perspective on the U.S. presidential race with R.P. Vickerstaff dinner guests on March 22.
This annual dinner honours Robert (Bob) Vickerstaff, an insurance professional who built Axa Pacific Insurance into one of western Canada's leading insurers. Passionate about our industry, he had a strong belief in free enterprise government and was a champion of western Canadian business.
